How much do yoga teachers make

There is no single standard yoga teacher salary. Pay depends on whether the teacher is an employee or an independent contractor, whether the amount is hourly or per class, and how much unpaid preparation, travel and administration the work requires.

This guide focuses on Australia and uses Australian dollars unless another currency is shown. The figures below are gross amounts before tax and, for contractors, before business expenses.

Yoga teacher pay in Australia

Employee wages and contractor fees are not interchangeable. An employee may receive award entitlements, superannuation and paid leave. A genuine contractor negotiates a fee for a service and usually pays their own tax and business costs, although some contractors paid mainly for their labour may still be entitled to superannuation.

Working arrangementCurrent benchmarkWhat it means
EmployeeA$25.74 to A$34.89 per hourAdult base rates across Levels 1 to 7 of the Fitness Industry Award from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026. The correct classification, casual loading, overtime and penalty rates can change the amount.
Independent contractor teaching at a studio or gymA$50 to A$100 per classRange reported by self-employed teachers in Yoga Australia’s State of Yoga 2023 survey and published in its income guidance. This is survey guidance, not a legal minimum.

Yoga Australia reports that about 60% of Australian yoga teachers identify as contractors. Contractors should allow for preparation, travel, administration, insurance, superannuation and other costs when setting a class fee. Employment status depends on the real working relationship, not only the label in a contract.

How to calculate your effective hourly rate

A per-class fee is not the same as an hourly wage. Divide the class fee by all the time required to deliver it:

  1. Add teaching, preparation, travel, setup, pack-down and administration time.
  2. Convert the total time to hours.
  3. Divide the gross class fee by those hours.
  4. Then subtract relevant business expenses to estimate the amount you actually retain.

For example, a contractor paid A$70 for a 60-minute class may spend another hour preparing, travelling and completing administration. That is A$35 gross per working hour before expenses, not A$70 per hour.

International yoga teacher pay benchmarks

International figures are only rough comparisons. Sources use different currencies, job definitions, sample sizes and methods. Some measure job advertisements, some use self-reported profiles, and some cover the broader fitness-instructor occupation.

Market and sourcePublished figureData note
United States, Bureau of Labor StatisticsUS$46,180 median annual pay, or US$22.20 per hourMay 2024 data for fitness trainers and instructors, a broader occupation that includes yoga instructors.
United States, IndeedUS$34.58 average per hour; US$19.11 to US$62.56 reported rangeBased on about 3,800 salaries from job postings over the preceding 36 months; updated 9 June 2026.
United Kingdom, PayScale£25.12 average per hour; £17.11 to £45.62 rangeBased on 21 salary profiles; underlying data last updated 17 April 2025.
India, PayScale₹513.95 average per hour; ₹154.56 to ₹1,000 rangeBased on 65 salary profiles; underlying data last updated 30 May 2024.

Do not convert these figures into an expected annual salary by simply multiplying by full-time hours. Many yoga teachers work variable or part-time schedules and spend unpaid time between classes. Local demand, experience, specialisation and employment status can materially change earnings.

How do I earn more as a yoga teacher?

Increasing total income is different from increasing an effective hourly rate. Teaching more classes can raise weekly revenue, but it also adds preparation, travel and administration. A sustainable approach considers both the fee and the total time and costs behind it.

Negotiation tip: build an engaged audience and community.

A teacher who can attract and retain students brings measurable value to a studio. Consistent attendance, referrals, an engaged Instagram following and an active WhatsApp community can support a request for a higher class rate. These channels can also help you fill your own events and workshops. Focus on trust, local relevance and actual bookings rather than follower count alone, because a large audience does not guarantee attendance. See our guide to growing a yoga audience and improving retention for more practical ideas.

Here is what you need to do to earn more as a yoga teacher:

Teachers can improve earnings by negotiating the full scope of studio work, reducing unpaid administration and developing services that fit their qualifications and audience. A website and booking system can reduce booking and payment work, but software does not replace marketing or guarantee income. Our booking system guide for new yoga teachers explains when dedicated software becomes worthwhile.

If you are a new yoga teacher with a 200 HR YTT and you wish to increase your income, start with these ideas and our guide to building confidence as a new yoga teacher:

  • Offer private or small-group classes and set the fee using total delivery time, venue costs and local demand.
  • Join any college or nearby community to teach yoga.
  • Offer workplace sessions using a clear corporate yoga marketing plan.
  • Create your yoga website and showcase your yoga practice or podcast by blogging or posting videos online.

Online classes, memberships and recorded programs can diversify revenue, but earnings vary widely with audience size, pricing and platform costs. Treat vendor income examples as marketing claims rather than a typical result.

If you are an experienced yoga teacher, you could also:

  • Switch to an online environment and create a yoga sequence online for students.
  • Take a Yoga workshop or partner with other yoga teachers for a yoga retreat.
  • Join any organization or corporate world and create a wellness program for the staff.
  • Tie up with a retailer and be their brand ambassador.
  • Sell your yoga products as a side business on your yoga website. Start with Apparel: t-shirts, yoga pants, hoodies, etc. Then, move on to equipment: mats, blocks, belts, blankets, etc., and miscellaneous items: calendars, stickers, cards, etc.

If you are a well-established yoga teacher and earning well, then you can also try different ways to earn more:

  • Develop workshops or teacher education within the scope of your qualifications and professional standards.
  • Create a niche online community where like-minded people can learn, share, and interact. Have each member pay a small amount to each other, provide premium content, and facilitate learning and growth on a specific topic. For example, Bali-based yoga instructor Suanne Reiker, with 18+ years of experience in digital marketing, created a business where she teaches yoga instructors the principles of online marketing.
  • Start a YouTube yoga channel. For example, German Yoga instructor Mady Morrison published a 30-day yoga challenge on her website in the new year. Each day, a new routine is linked to a video on her YouTube channel.
  • Try converting your yoga music into an album and selling it.
  • Write blogs about your experience.
  • Create your yoga app and have students stream your classes.

Review your effective hourly rate regularly. A higher class fee, less unpaid travel, fuller classes or more efficient administration may improve it; simply teaching more classes usually increases total income rather than the rate earned for each hour worked.

There are many ways for certified yoga teachers to make money offline and online. If you haven’t begun, do it right now.

Laziness and dullness are the worst factors that can undermine your motivation and dreams. Create your yoga website, join an online booking system, and start earning with the above methods and means.

Remember that you are not merely a yoga teacher in a class but a businesswoman or man who can become an entrepreneur and be successful in your profession.

Don’t forget to give a part of your income back to the community or any living being who is not as lucky as you because all living beings on this planet are part of us.
